Hidden gems of Uganda Community Project 

BACKGROUND: Hidden gems of Uganda has started numerous community development initiatives to reach the rural, needier populations of Uganda. Kijuguta, Kiyoora and Rwabarera Villages are situated 11 km outside of Kabale town in Southwestern Uganda with a population of nearly 1400 people. Currently these two villages of Kiyoora and Rwabarera have the highest level of poverty. In this case the children are the most vulnerable. It is so sad that most of the women have resorted to going along with their children to work in the stone quarries without giving them a chance to acquire basic education. 

On the ground, Hidden gems of Uganda has started to rescue some of the children, giving them a chance to acquire basic education. We are here to create a chance for these vulnerable children to acquire basic needs. Things like education, shelter, food, safe water and access to good healthcare. Furthermore, Hidden Gems Uganda Treks & Tours is supporting upcoming tourist guide women  for training including driving skills that will help them later with new  jobs. We call up on anyone with a helping hand to join us and support this great cause. 

CHALLENGES: The people of this area rely mainly on agriculture as their source of food and income. With the changing climate, production has changed noticeably in the area. The main diet for people in the area is called Posho, made from ground maize meal, sweet potatoes and beans but it does not have not much variation to meet nutritional needs. Access to safe drinking water is another huge challenge in the area, with unsafe water causing many of the area’s health issues such as typhoid. HIV rates in the area also account for a number of the area’s orphans. For many families, paying school fees is out of the question and without education, the cycle of poverty continues. 

OPPORTUNITIES: Instead of getting overwhelmed with the depressing statistics, Hidden gems of Uganda is looking for a positive way forward. By focusing efforts in these villages, the community is already starting to see results. With time, Hidden gems of Uganda hopes Kijuguta, Kiyoora and Rwabarera Villages’ projects will become a model for other villages to follow. The project is doing this through multiple initiatives including chick rearing. This is a rural organization that is dealing with improving agriculture and the overall standard for people in the community. This is achieved by utilizing better methods of farming, rearing better breeds of domestic animals, planting fruit, involving the women in the tour guiding profession, making of crafts, educating orphans and providing skills for the disabled and special needs education. 

Hidden Gems of Uganda, Craft Shop (on plot 407Block 18 Mutebire Road) is one such initiative dedicated to support this project in many ways including selling the project’s crafts free of charge and helping to find markets for the project’s produce. The project is currently rearing 200 chicks with a goal to rear over 500 chicks in the future. Eggs are an affordable, easy protein source for Orphans/Vulnerable children where meat can be scarce and expensive in areas lacking electricity. A flock of chicks can help families add nourishing, life-sustaining eggs to their inadequate diets. The protein in just one egg is a nutritious gift for a hungry child. Protein-packed eggs from even a single chicken can make a life-saving difference. Hidden gems of Uganda helps many hungry families with a starter flock of 10 to 50 chicks. The hybrid chicks donated from Hidden gems of Uganda if fed well, can lay one egg a day. Because chickens require little space and can thrive on readily available food scraps, families can make money from the birds without spending much. And chickens help control insects and fertilize gardens.
